Mactan is famous for its beaches, boat the “Lechon”, "Puso" (rice wrapped in coconut leaves), and the seafood markets. The city is rich in history.
On April 27, 1521 Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer was killed by Datu Lapu Lapu, leader of the indigenous tribe of Mactan. Magellan got involved in a battle between two rival local chieftains. This did not stop the Spaniards from colonizing the Philippine archipelago which contributed to the widespread Spanish Christian influence present till this day. Ferdinand Magellan led the exploration of the world financed by Spain where ultimately proved the world was round. Similarly, was one of the greatest explorers of his era and the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean. He was ordered by King Charles V of Spain to spread Chrisianity. Lapu Lapu was a leader in Mactan who opposed of Christianity brought by the Spanish which was led by Ferdinand. |
